Conejos Peak, Colorado

August 2005

Conejos Peak 13,172 ft.

Conejos Peak is a rather obscure mountain in the southern San Juan mountain range.  The attraction of Conejos Peak is that it is the Conejos County highpoint and the summit offers spectacular views of the South San Juan Wilderness.  Conejos Peak is a relatively easy day hike with only a 2000 ft gain in elevation (from your car) and seven miles round-trip hike.  It is a great mountain for kids, dogs, or anyone looking for a half-day hike with great views from a summit.

We started from the car at 6:00am.  Jackie heads for Tobacco Lake as the sun is coming up.

Alan takes a break before reaching Tobacco Lake.  The summit of Conejos is difficult to see until getting very close.

Views like this are what we came for.  Jackie enjoys the valley just below Tobacco Lake.
